Ola "Scoggs" Mae (Barton) Harmon 1918-2009

Ola "Scoggs" Mae Harmon, 91, died Friday, July 24, 2009, at Down East Health and Rehabilitation in Gatesville, N.C.

She was born April 8, 1918, at Hartshorn, daughter of Charley Monroe Barton and Vena Delphia Crabtree Barton. She and Wilby Harmon were married Aug. 7, 1939. They later divorced.

She worked many years with her son, Neal, at the family dairy. She later worked at H.D. Lee Factory, where she was a pocket creaser. Upon retiring, she volunteered at the Summersville Senior Center.

She was a member of the Church of God in Summersville and the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 6060 in Elizabeth City.

When she was unable to live alone, she moved to Sunbury, N.C., with her son, Neal, and his family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Bernard Neal Harmon Sr.; four brothers, Virgil Barton, Cecil Barton, Ralph Barton and Elmer Barton; and two sisters, Marie Goetz and Mildred Cook.

Survivors include three grandchildren; a great granddaughter; two sisters, Thelma McKee of Summersville and June Stark of Ivanhoe, Texas; a brother, James "Jim" Barton of St. Charles; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were Tuesday, July 28, at Bradford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Steelman officiating. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery.
